Thanks to Dave / Orange Event Monday 5th Dec!
Dear all,
First of all, many thanks to Dave for covering yesterday’s lectures. He tells me that he got a round of applause from both cohorts, so thanks to you too for making him welcome!
I have added the lecture videos from the sessions I delivered last year, so if there are any concepts or points that are unclear after the session yesterday you are strongly encouraged to watch the videos and reinforce what Dave covered. This is particularly important because next week will be the Orange Event for both Javascript and Web/PHP!
Once again, with feeling: the lectures on Monday 5th December will include an Orange Event. You need to be there, or you will miss out on up to 10% of the marks for the module!
Also make sure you are there for Wednesday’s workshops. The practicals will reinforce many of the concepts and principles that were covered in the lecture, and as you work I will go up front and discuss things that arise from people’s work. Attendance will leave you in much better shape for the Orange Event next Monday! Do good work, put in the effort, do some revision, and then go and ace the Orange Event!
All the best and see you on Wednesday.

Group allocations / codebash tomorrow reminder
Dear all,
You should have all received your group allocation (or will do before the end of the day). Please pay particular attention to what the email says, particularly with respect to lecture times after enrichment week.
I also wanted to remind you all of the Codebash tomorrow in SB2022/3. This will start at 9am and run until the end of the day (5pm or thereabouts). You can come for the whole day or just dip in for a few hours, and it will be an opportunity to pick up additional medals that you might need help with. Many of you are already storming the top of the medal table, and you guys might like to come along to pick up assist points and secure your place at the top of the table. If that isn’t you, however, and you need extra support to get the medals you need, then you should make sure to come along to get the help you need to succeed.
I have always said that I will make sure that anyone who tries their best will get through the module. So, come along tomorrow, give me your best, and get those medals!
See you there!
All the best,
Paul
TLAP Deadline and Codebash Clarification
Dear all,
It seems that lots of people weren’t listening in the workshop on Wednesday, nor reading the feedback email they got!
A clarification:
The feedback email you will have received represents your CURRENT marks for Thinking Like A Programmer. As I’ve announced in lectures and workshops, and as you can find in all the module documentation, the deadline for completing Thinking Like A Programmer is effectively Sunday 6th November.
I will send a final update with your total TLAP marks at the time.
Finally, and as a few of you have pointed out, the Codebash is Thursday 3rd NOVEMBER not October all day in SB2022/3. (Unless you have a time machine and can make it on the 3rd October instead )
All the best,
Paul
Programming 1 Entry Survey
I would be very grateful if students could take the survey below so I can get a feel for everyone’s prior experience of Programming.
There are only a few questions and it will only take a few minutes.
Hello from the Programming 1 team
Dear all,
Welcome to Programming 1! My name is Paul Neve and my job is to introduce you guys to programming.
I believe very strongly that learning programming should be fun and engaging. Some of you will doubtlessly be approaching this module with some trepidation. Do not be afraid! The computer cannot bite, error messages can’t hurt you. In the first weeks of the module we will be trying to get you to think logically and break programmatic problems down, which is the fundamental skill required to be a good programmer. All other things follow that. There will be no incomprensible program code in the first few weeks, we start off with visual problems and programs which hopefully should be good fun to engage with. We present introductory programming in a unique way here at KU – no other university has the same approach or tools as us, and it is something of a speciality of ours. At the heart of Programming 1 is a belief that everybody can learn to program and everybody can have fun while doing it. Don’t get me wrong: this isn’t going to be easy. It will be hard work, and you will get out whatever you put in. But if you are willing to put in that work then by the end of the academic year you should have an excellent foundation in programming.
The important things first:
- Please check your timetable on OSIS regularly as the times and dates of sessions are subject to change. (This applies to all modules, not just Programming 1)
- Also be sure to check your KU email for additional information about where to go and at what time. Any changes may take a couple of days to filter through to the timetable so if there is a need to move something in a hurry, Studyspace and your email is where it’ll be.
- It is CRUCIAL that you attend ALL of your scheduled classes. There will usually be one lecture and one workshop per week allocated to you. BE AT BOTH EVERY WEEK. The workshop assumes you’ve been to the lecture so if you dodge the lecture and only come to the workshop you will be lost!
I am looking forward to meeting you all!
All the best,
Paul
